2011 PROGRAM

Oct 20 | Oct 21 | Oct 22 | Oct 23

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22

Metro 4 Theatre, 618 State St.

1:20 pm - We Were Here (a benefit for PPF's HIV/AIDS Programs)

We Were Here provides fresh insights into the earliest days of the AIDS crisis in the United States, particularly at its flash point in San Francisco. At the end of the 1970s, the city was a growing gay mecca, drawing people from all over the country to the energy of Castro Street. But in the early 1980s, those carefree days were suddenly replaced by a state of war. This masterful documentary captures with heartbreaking exactitude the end of a time of fun and innocence, and the drawing together of a community in ways they had never anticipated. From the filmmakers of The Cockettes (OUTrageous 2003).

“Extraordinarily moving…More heartrending than depressing, more uplifting than wrenching.” –Los Angeles Times

Director: David Weissman / USA, 2011, 90 minutes

Special Guest: Santa Barbara poet Ron Alexander will read from his work as we honor those we have lost from our community to HIV/AIDS. Mayor Helene Schneider will also read a proclamation from City Council recognizing the festival on its 20th anniversary.

ALL PROCEEDS FROM THIS SCREENING'S TICKET SALES WILL DIRECTLY SUPPORT PACIFIC PRIDE FOUNDATION'S HIV/AIDS PROGRAMS

6:20 pm - Wish Me Away

Rocketing to country music fame in the late 1990s, Chely Wright achieved everything she’d dreamed of since childhood—except the freedom to be herself. Kept in the closet by her troubled family history, small-town religious upbringing, fear of losing fans, and the “don’t ask, don’t tell” Nashville establishment, she lived a double life beneath the glamour and glitz. Wish Me Away follows Wright over a three-year period as she decides to publicly come out, the first and only major country artist to do so. Diary footage, music, and intimate interviews weave an inspiring portrait of a performer struggling to find a new balance, while realizing she may never sing at the Grand Ole Opry again. A top award winner at Frameline and the Los Angeles Film Festival, this film glows with Chely Wright’s luminous presence.

Directors: Bobbie Birleffi and Beverly Kopf / USA, 2011, 96 minutes

8:20 pm - eCupid

On the cusp of turning thirty, junior ad man Marshall is bored and frustrated in his settled life with Gabe, his partner since college. Dreaming of hot frat boys, skater dudes, and that friend of a friend whose picture he obsesses over online, one day Marshall impulsively downloads the eCupid app for his phone. Cheekily voiced by Morgan Fairchild, eCupid promises true love but brings big trouble. Soon, more “dream” men than Marshall can handle begin appearing in his life—at his front door, at his office, at the corner go-go dancer bar—while his relationship with Gabe goes on the fritz. A charming romantic comedy for our over-mediated age, enlivened by a talented cast.

Director: JC Calciano / USA, 2011, 94 minutes

INVITED GUESTS: Director JC Calciano, actors Houston Rhines and Galen Drever, and additional crew members
